A civilian contractor died Friday during a dive operation at Norfolk Naval Station.

Michael Louis Knight, 49, was part of a Seaward Marine dive crew conducting underwater ship husbandry operations on the amphibious assault ship Wasp.

Emergency crews were called to Pier 10 at 10:17 a.m., and Knight was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:52 a.m., said Terri Davis, a Navy spokeswoman.

According to the company, Knight had worked for Seaward Marine Services for 24 years. He lived in Virginia Beach.

I really feel for Mike's family and there is only so much an individual can do to help. I will be volunteering my time as soon as I can get back on my feet so raising awareness and working with local authorities to conitinuously reduce risk becomes standard operating procedure.

RIP Mike!

I've asked Mike Dean in SUPSALV if he had heard anything further on the cause of death. Seaward has always had an excellent track record in safety - they are one of the Navy's most trusted contractors. I'll post what I hear when I hear something.
