Surface Diving Pick Up Harrnes: My Opinion, What Is Yours?

    It is my firm belief that if Stephen O'Malley had not been picked up by a harness he would be alive today! Every fully dressed surface diver should be brought out of the water in a Stage or Open Bottom Bell. That Stage or Open Bottom Bell should be able to accommodate a diver in the prone position, when the diver is injured or in respiratory distress.

    Every current Open Bottom Bell and Stage could be fitted easily with a flip-out floor. Think about it, do want to be hung by a harness, when you're having breathing problems or are injured?n See Pictures below

With no weightbelt a commercial diver has in excess of 70 lbs of bailout and helmet on, a man in distress should not be hung from a crane or have to climb a ladder!!

It is my firm belief that this contributed to a divers death last year diving on a North Sea Wind-farm. It took in access of 30 minutes to get him from the bottom of the dive ladder to the deck! He had been having problems breathing. Simple thought but: If you have a crane or tugger you can have a stage or open bottom bell!

A recovery winch and harness should never be used on an unconscious diver, or one with respiratory problems. When an unconscious diver is hanging in a recovery harness, he cannot maintain an open airway, which is one of the three first priorities of First Aid and Emergency Medical Care. In plain English: a recovery winch and recovery harness is not an acceptable method of diver recovery, period.

Absolutely Hal! A holger nielsen stretcher or something similar.

A stage is essential for all surface diving not requiring inwater or surface deco.  For ALL dives requiring inwater, surface deco. or both a Wet Bell/Open Bottom Bell should be deployed!
